it’s been a while

Well, I haven’t posted in a week, but it’s for very good reason.

After posting on Monday about being 0/0 on the birthing progress, my water broke at 6:15pm Tuesday, and Emma Grace made her grand entrance into the world on Wednesday, May 16 at 5:59am. She weighed 7lbs 4oz, was 20.5 inches long, has super long fingers and toes, and a head full of brown hair that is the exact same color as Ken’s. She’s just beautiful and perfect in every way.

This is obviously after the epidural ;)

We got home a little after noon on Friday, and things have been busy busy busy.

My mom was with us from the time I went into labor until Saturday night, and my dad was here for the labor/delivery, and then he came back Friday night and stayed all day Saturday. It was WONDERFUL to have them here to help out with Emma. My mom cooked her tooshy off and made us some delicious meals that we’re still enjoying, and daddy put up the ceiling fan in Emma’s room. And of course, they cuddled their new granddaughter, fed her, put her to sleep, changed her diaper and generally let Ken and I enjoy a little extra sleep.

The only “problem” we’re having is with breastfeeding. Emma was born tongue-tied, which means that the frenulum under her tongue is too tight; therefore, she can’t get her tongue over her bottom gum, and she has a hard time latching. I’ve been pumping/bottle-feeding and supplementing with formula when I can’t keep up. We had a rough couple of days, but it has gotten easier.

Yesterday, the doctor cut her frenulum. After about 15 seconds of crying and a 2-hour nap, she was just fine. We still have a long way to go, but we’re getting there.

Unfortunately, with every good thing comes a bad. On Sunday, we found out that our oldest dog Mollie has cancer. After a long day of struggling to breathe, she had a respiratory crisis and Ken rushed her to the animal hospital. A night of steroids and oxygen didn’t help her, so we had to make the hard decision to put her to sleep. She was 14 years old, and I’m honored that I was a part of the last 4 years.
