Hey look … I’m late again for the You Capture weekly photo challenge! Go me!!
I actually took this a couple of days ago, but I just now got around to editing/uploading it. Here is my interpretation of rustic …
rus·tic (rstk)
adj.
1. Of, relating to, or typical of country life or country people.
2.
a. Lacking refinement or elegance; coarse.
b. Charmingly simple or unsophisticated.
3. Made of unfinished or roughly finished wood: rustic furniture.
4. Having a rough or textured appearance; rusticated. Used of masonry.
I am a little offended that the definition seems to imply that country people lack refinement or elegance. Pfft, when I sit out on the front porch in these rustic chairs, I’m drinking Earl Grey tea out of a Limoges tea cup with my pinky in the air.
Or not.
I tend to think of rustic as kind of old and beaten down. I guess now people are going to assume that I think country people are old and beaten down. But that’s not true, either.
So my interpretation this week is an old and pretty beaten down wicker rocking chair that sits on our front porch. He has a mate, sister bench, and cousin table that sit out there with him, as well. All they all look pretty … rustic.
One of these days, we’ll have them refinished, but for now, they’ll live their lives as rustic. Old. Beaten down. Even lacking refinement and elegance.
But you know what? We like them that way.
