So we are putting hardwood down in the living room, but I can’t decide if we want a rug or not.

First of all, we are getting hardwood to lessen the allergies that come with carpet. Granted, I know that rugs are easier to clean than carpet, but they probably still get mites, right? And tracked in dirt and pollen from the dogs?

Secondly, our living room is EASILY the most trafficked room in our house. It’s where we spend most of our day/evening, and you have to walk through the living room to get upstairs – so it gets the most wear and tear.

Thirdly, I’m also getting the hardwood installed so that I can clean it much easier. Will a rug ruin that?

If you have a hardwood floor with a rug, what is your cleaning routine?

And finally, I’ll let you guys help me decide …

Should we buy a rug for the living room?

yes
no
other (please explain)

Okay, so initially, I was going to say yes. I grew up in a house that had ALL hardwood floors. My parents had area rugs in the living room, the den and under the dining table. And also had runners in all the hallways. I loved hardwood, but hated it in the bedroom. You get out of bed and that floor was so cold!!!

But then I thought about it and we’re talking about your living room. And all the points that you make are so valid. With the area rugs, we had to use a dust mop on all the wood surfaces and then go in with a vacuum on the rugs, too. I don’t think any cleaning work was really eliminated. I’d stick with the wood floors and be done with it.

We used to have a rug on our hardwood floors, and now we do not. It made it so much more difficult to clean the dog and cat hair, plus it just got stained and looked dirty. Now, with just hardwood it is so much easier to clean.

I vote yes for a rug! It will help “warm” the room up. I don’t know about you, but I know that I hate sitting on the hardwood floor (our playroom) in our house when I’m playing with the kids. We purchased an area rug for it, and it’s much more comfortable now. The kids also enjoy it more, and spend much more time in there now. Area rugs can be cleaned, or even replaced after they show too much wear. They can be purchased for a reasonable price. They also add some color to the room so that it’s not so bland. Ours has different color squares all over it. It’s nice.
