late-night post

in project organization

It’s late, everyone is in bed, and I’m here in front of the computer, as usual. I seem to get most of my work done late at night when the house is quiet and still.

So … project organization is going really well. There are two large bags in the back of my car that will be going to Goodwill tomorrow morning while Emma is in school. I pretty much have to hide it from her, because … well … most of it is her toys. Shhhhhhh!

And also? The kitchen is spotless right now!! And it’s been clean for almost a week! I have a whole routine – I run the dishwasher and get my coffee all ready at night so all I have to do is hit the “on” button when we come downstairs. And  yes, I do have a coffee pot with a timer, but I lost the instruction booklet, and I have NO idea how to set it. It also blinks 12:00 constantly.

Anyway, while Emma is eating her breakfast, I work on my first cup of coffee and unload the dishwasher from the night before so it can be loaded throughout the day.

I know what most of you are thinking … that’s how you’ve been doing it for years. But remember, my mind just doesn’t work that way. However, walking into the kitchen sets up the rest of my day, and if it’s clean, then I have instant balance to get started on the other gajillion things that need to be done every day.

I also cleaned off *most* of my desk, but I still have a few wayward piles that need to be worked on. I plan on leaving my computer off until I get the last of it organized tomorrow morning. I’m too tempted by the dinging of my email. Or Twitter. Or Facebook. Yes, I have a problem.

Already have a gameplan written out for the rest of the week, thanks to my handy dandy MomAgenda planner. I know, I buy a new planner every year and then use it for about three weeks, but this? This thing is serious. It’s an all-in-one planner for moms. It’s got a normal day planning area, but then it has 4 blocks underneath for each kid. Well, since we only have the one, I used the other blocks for cleaning, our business and training for the half-marathon. It also has a little space for dinner, which works just perfectly with my meal plan. It’s for real, yo. And I can tell that it will become my third arm in no time at all.

I think I can get the rest of the house finished this week, and then we’ll have to tackle the garage together. But as much as I hate to say this, because I don’t want to put it off … it will probably have to wait until it’s a bit warmer.

I won’t do this every week or anything, but several of you actually asked me to keep posting about it … and it’s basically free therapy for me. ;) I know many of you said you have the same issues, and I know that I get inspired when I read about others making positive changes around their house, so maybe, just maybe, I am inspiring someone else?

Keep organizing! Keep decluttering! Let’s get it done!

That is so wonderful Keli! I read your other post and I am so like you. My house is a disaster right now. I go through spurts where I have no energy or motivation to clean or even do daily maintenance. It backs up and gets so overwhelming, I have no idea where to start so I don’t. Then by some miracle I feel I really can do it and I go crazy cleaning. The next day I’m so burnt out I let everything go again. It’s such a nasty cycle.

I love your routine. I’ve been trying to do the dinner dishes and run the dishwasher at night. It worked for a week in December! But I’m in the overwhelmed cycle right now, so I’m just trying to keep some dishes clean! :) Please keep posting! I so need someone I can relate to right now! I’m going to start the de-cluttering, I am so with you on the clutter = overwhlemed! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

Mmm. The thought of starting the day off doing something positive is interesting. Not sure I’m enough of a morning person to make something like that work. Also, we’ve pawned off the dishes and loading and unloading of the dishwasher on kids. Hmm. I might need to think of a different morning routine to start the day out right.

Sounds like you’re off to a really awesome start! Have you ever checked out flylady.net? She has that same idea, about how keeping one area of your house consistently clean will eventually spread to the rest of the house. She really helped me out with cleaning routines. for about a year, then my dis-organization took over again. But I do feel inspired by your posting – and know I NEED to start up my cleaning routines again. Thanks for sharing!

I’m totally impressed!~ great job starting the year off right. We REALLY need to do that too – maybe I’ll be inspired. Hopefully, but who knows.

I admire the parents that can have their children calmly go through their own toys and let them pick the ones to donate. Not at my house! I still have to sneak toys (aka crap!) outta my 7 year old’s room!

Love this! Now you’ve motivated me to turn off my computer for a bit and get stuff done. Isn’t it funny how if the kitchen is ready in the morning the rest of the day just flows? Crazy but so true. Oh and I double heart my momAgenda. It rocks! :)

Yes, keep posting about this–other people’s progress motivates me, too! And I could use some motivating. Isn’t it amazing how these things really affect our mood and something so little as a tidy kitchen can start your day off right? I love it. Keep it up, Keli!!!

I love these! This is what my goal for this year is also, to capture more of the little moments in my children’s lives.

This is so awesome! I came home last night to a clean kitchen! My husband had done some major work, also did some laundry. So now I have a whole pile to fold on the guest bed….but I can do this. Tonight, that is my goal. To fold the 5 loads…..

Since we were house sitting for my parent’s last week, we had our computers over there. So when we unpacked them on Sunday, I made sure to clean off my desk first.

We can all do this!

Goodbye clutter!
