in project organization

I owe you guys a texture tutorial, but this weekend was CRAZY busy, and I’m just now sitting down at my computer to do fun things.

I will do a processing tutorial for this image tomorrow …

And then a texture for portraits tutorial later in the week. :)

Real quick … my mom emailed me this weekend about my simplifying life post, and she knows me oh so well. She said …

I know you are doing great with your kitchen but I still say the first step y’all should take is getting rid of clutter, everywhere.  It will make everything else so much simpler.

She is so right. I’m all, “Woohoo!! Look at me! I kept the kitchen clean for a week!” but that’s not the heart of the problem.

The heart of the problem is …

  • receipts
  • fusible interfacing instructions
  • knick knacks
  • sunglasses
  • Emma’s hair clips and elastics (my word, those things are everywhere)
  • spare buttons from new winter jackets
  • coupons
  • an FM transmitter to my iPod
  • Emma’s eczema lotion

And that is just the stuff that is on the tall kitchen counter that separates our kitchen from our living room.

ACK!

Of course, it multiplies like bunnies, and I just can’t keep up with it. Another blog that I read said something else that really rang true to me …

organization simply requires a ‘home’ for everything

I know what Ken’s thinking … that I’ll go out and buy more junk to hold junk. But I won’t. I already have places and boxes and buckets and bins to keep the stuff that we need to keep – I just need to USE them. The rest of it is going in the trash or the Goodwill pile or Craigslist. Period.

We just don’t need to keep so much STUFF around that we “may” use one day or “hope” to get around to.

Mom also suggested that I just tackle everything in the morning and then the afternoon can be my computer / picture editing / quietly folding laundry / making supper time. Again, this would work best for me, because I tend to put off a lot of my cleaning when Emma’s napping because I don’t want to wake her up.

So … you may not see me around as much for coffee chat. But just know that I’m working my tail off and making a huge dent in this chaos we call life.

Thanks, mom. And thank all of you for the support and kind words! xo

ps – I’m scheduling this to post first thing in the morning, but I assure you, I am writing it at 9:15pm on Sunday night. ;)

We are SO in the same boat! I didn’t realize how bad it was here until I made a list of all the places that needed decluttering – I have a huge task in front of me, but I am set to do it, even if it takes all winter and spring. At least I’ll have a clutter-free summer. But this weekend we tackled 2 sets of bookshelves and 3 cabinets, so I feel good about that. Anchors Away!

You know, she’s right. When I declutter I feel like I have lifted a huge load and my home just feels more peaceful. Then 6 months (or 1 month or 1 week!!) later I see the clutter building up and I know I need to do it again. Everyone is different, but I feel more relaxed with less stuff around me. Of course, I am surrounded by stuff and so I am not as relaxed as I could be! By the way your post prompted me to start filling and running the dishwasher at night and them emptying it in the morning and it has helped me keep my kitchen cleaner. Speaking of that ….. I gotta go empty the dishwasher!

Moms are always right!! I went through the same thing when we remodeled our kitchen. If you haven’t used it in the last year… get rid of it!! Can’t wait to see the edit!

I think you have inspired me! Seems like every time I open a cupboard in my house lately I am pulling everything out and sorting it into “keep” “trash” and “donate”!! I absolutely LOVE and adore the results. I seem to all of the sudden have the power to let go of the ‘stuff’ we never use that I always had to keep “just in case” before. Keep it up! I hope I can too! :)

It can be so overwhelming, can’t it? UGH. This week I have picked one small thing each morning-kitchen junk drawer, Wyatt’s sock basket, etc……I’m starting out small so I can pull out the bug guns later! : ) Good luck Keli! And I would so love a tutorial, I have never tried any of that yet, way too intimidated!

How great is your Mama?
My Mom called me freaking out today : )
Except she sounds so nice when she freaks out.
Not like my SCREAMING, hypervenhilating, psychotic freaking out :)
She is all like, “Becky, do you really think you should trick Gary into having a baby?”
And I was like “Mom, it was just a joke. I am not going to trick anyone into having a baby with me” and then she was like “Anyone? What is going on?” And I was like “I have to go Mommy :) LOVE you! : )”
She is pretty great too! I love Moms!
