b6 is a miracle worker

by keli on February 9, 2010

I never had morning sickness with Emma. I think I remember one morning of feeling a little nauseous, but that was it. And when people complained about morning sickness, I felt bad for them — but I really didn’t think it was *that* bad.

Those of you who have dealt with morning sickness can virtually slap me now, because I totally 100% deserve it.

These last couple of weeks have been hell. I don’t normally say that word, but that’s the only way I can describe it.

I really didn’t throw up that much – maybe once or twice a day. But the constant feeling of nausea was so exhausting. Even when I knew that I was feeling nauseous due to lack of eating, I couldn’t eat because everything I thought about eating made me feel more sick. Poor Ken had a week of making his own supper or ordering in pizza, because I couldn’t even imagine trying to cook something. Especially chicken.

So I pretty much laid on the couch all day every day. Housework went down the tubes. Dirty laundry was piled up everywhere, but I couldn’t bring myself to put it into the washer. Dishes were all over the kitchen, but loading the dishwasher turned into a gag fest. I don’t even want to talk about the bathrooms or the furballs all over the floor. Ken was amazing through it all, and I don’t know how I could have done it without his help. And poor Emma — well, she watched more tv than she’s ever watched in her life.

So around 11pm on Friday night, I was desperately searching the internet for help when I saw an article on vitamin B6. And then I saw comment after comment about how amazing it is and how it worked for so many women.

Bought it the next day, took it that night, woke up feeling about 1000% better. I take a whole 50mg pill every night and then a half of a pill the next morning. If I start feeling icky in the afternoon, I take another half. So far, it’s working really well for me. I still have some serious food aversions, and I can’t eat a lot of the things that made me throw up last week, but I’m doing a lot better.

I promise to post about something other than feeling sick in the next couple of days.

Ahh B-6…how wonderful it is and I can count the ways. Your 1st and 2nd pregnancies sound just like mine. B-6 wasn’t completely enough for me so I added in unisom. I took 1/2 of each before bed, slept like a log, and was able to get through the day somewhat normally. During the very middle of the 1st tri I did take 1/4 unisom with 1/2 of the B-6 during the middle of the day if I started feeling yucky.

I so hope you’ll be over this soon. Having a baby is definitely a labor of love (and not just the labor part!)

P.S. Do you use newborn cloth diapers? Have any you would recommend?

You are so lucky that the B6 worked for you. That and Unisom did nothing for me…so I had to get a prescription for Zofran…which is what they give to cancer patients after chemo. I’m so glad that it has helped you though! Believe me when I say I know how you feel. At least you can drink water! I went the whole time not being able to drink plain water….the first big drink after giving birth was HEAVEN!

*virtual slap!* (Just kidding)
I’m sorry it’s been worse for you this time, I was hoping you’d get by without any of it. I hope it tapers off for you early, too. I was sick with Reese for 23 weeks solid. I could still EAT relatively well, but I felt I had to constantly keep something in my stomach to avoid it. One stomach growl and it was all over…bleugh.

Zofran worked well for me…SO well. Couldn’t have lived without it. I’m glad B6 is working for you!

ugh. this post brings tears to my eyes. actually, i’m crying now. i love the pregnancy and babies so very much that i think hyperemesis is God’s way of keeping me from having 82 of them. (because, honestly, how can one say they love pregnancy when they’ve had hyperemesis every time?)
this last pregnancy, i had a Zofran pump. so, i’d poke myself in the leg everyday & Zofran was then administered continuously. it didn’t totally take away my vomiting, but it did save my life. (i think literally.)
i’m glad the B6 is working for you and hope you have a wonderful rest of the pregnancy! and i’m so thankful you have a wonderful husband, too. that really is a trying time & i can’t imagine doing it w/ a partner who isn’t in it, too!

Glad you’ve found something that works for you, hon.
I never had nausea issues w/ any of my pgs, so I can’t imagine feeling that way all day, every day.
((hugs))

I agree with the B6….I took it for a the first few weeks of my pregnancy with Kate cause I was so queasy. My mom(whose a midwife) suggests taking ginger capsules too, you can take a whole ton of them and it really really helps with feeling nauseaus(sp?). Plus, because its capsule form you don’t have to taste it….since I am NOT a fan of ginger products. haha..So glad your feeling better!

I’ve been sick since around New Years.. why did I not know to try this? I am just like you — my first two pregnancies didn’t make me sick. I had a few days of feeling “eh” with Clark, but I felt amazing with Alice. This time I’ve been losing weight and the mere thought of food makes me gag. Fortunately it seems to be going away on its own now that I’ve crossed into the second trimester. I hadn’t cooked in like a month! My kids were eating sandwiches and yogurt for dinner every night. I am so so so glad you are feeling better Keli. It really is all encompassing!

Love your blog, just started following it. Came to it by way of iheartfaces.

Congratulations on the new baby! How exciting! I loved, loved, loved being pregnant and having my babies (3 baby girls, ages 12, 9 and 6). I had morning sickess with 2 of them and with my middle daughter experienced none. I thought it strange, but learned to enjoy it! Didn’t know of the benefits of B6 back then! Glad it’s giving you some relief. Enjoy your baby bump and your toddler. So blessed!

Take care,
Ana

It was the maternity vitamins that made me sick, I still took them but had to make sure I had lots of food in me.
