yellow

in pregnancy

I went through a period where I wanted my house to look like the Pottery Barn catalog. Dark furniture. Neutrals everywhere. Brown, tan, khaki. Pretty much every shade of brown you can think of with a little muted green thrown in for good measure.

brown living room

oh goodness, this picture is pre-hardwood when Emma was just a crawly baby

Now? I’d give anything to have white slipcovers on our sofa and chair. With bright yellow throw pillows. With a white tv stand & DVD shelf.

I know … white on a sofa with kids and dogs is kind of insane. But white slipcovers can be washed. With bleach.

We also used to have dark wood in our master bedroom, but we’re in the process of selling it and replacing it with light wood furniture (that we got for free or as gifts!) And I’m going to go with a yummy light blue (think beachy blue, not country blue) on the walls with sunny yellow, orange & white accents.

I even have tan & brown everyday dishes that I now don’t like, because I’m so over brown.

I wish I had gotten the bright Fiestaware. Or white dinner plates with colored saucers and cups. Meh.

All of that to say, I finally feel comfortable admitting that I like colors. And I mostly like light and airy colors. And I really like yellow – even if it’s not a main color, I tend to want yellow as an accent color in almost every room of our house.

Emma’s nursery is my most favorite room in the entire house …

We shunned the normal girly pinks and went with something more neutral, even though we knew it was a girl. And I still love it to this day. It’s the perfect color, and we’ll always have a punch of yellow thrown in there somewhere.

And I am loving our brightly colored home office / playroom which is a yellow’y green with hot pink and orange and teal accents.

I painted my black desk white a few months ago and then added sunny yellow accents this past week. If I could just have a  vase of wild white daisies sitting on my desk every day, I’d never ever leave.

Seriously, seeing yellow everyday just makes me happy.

So I’m wondering if we should do like we did with Emma – just forget the “pink for girl” rule and paint this next baby girl’s room a nice, cheerful yellow.

Awwwww – congratulations!!! I think you should go with yellow. Forget the “rules”. I had blue walls in my room when I was growing up (and when I was a teenager, my mom painted them purple – but it was what I picked out.)

Emma is going to make such a wonderful big sister! Now you will have too sweet baby girls to dress up and I’m sure you will get some amazing photographs of the two of them together (you know, once they get over the sibling rivalry thing) ;)

Yay!! Congratulations on a baby girl!! I’m so with you on the color thing too. I used to be all conservative with color and now all I want is more and better color in my life. I think yellow is beautiful and such a happy color. Go for it!

I not only have yellow EVERYWHERE (you can catch a post on yellow on my blog today as well) but it’s my favorite…as are light/airy colors. My bedroom is also a beachy blue. I have yellow accents everywhere and actually some fake flowers that are white wild daisies so I have little need to leave my house. And…plans for my [future] baby’s nursery? That’s right, already yellow. :) LOVE it. :)

i’m a fan of colors too – I’m in the process of painting kitchen chairs a dark aqua :). I think every piece of furniture should come with a side of “in a couple of years when my taste changes can I bring this back and exchange it for something completely different!”

congrats on the girl… i totally thought it was a boy from previous post hints… shows how intelligent I am :)

I honestly didn’t mean to hint either way b/c we just found out this morning. I thought it was a boy simply because this pregnancy has been 100% different, but lo and behold, there she is. :)

wooohooo! Welcome to the Two Girls Club! :)

We didn’t do all pink for Maggie either (except now, in the new house, her room was already pink so HOLY CRAP are we drowning in pink in there!) We did cream/green with pink stenciled tulips in her nursery and I just loved it. (And was a little sad when we moved, I’ll admit.) http://www.flickr.com/photos/jayesel/427349489/in/set-72157594324187530/

This time, we’re doing similar I think- the bedding is mostly cream with pinks, blues, greens, peaches. I haven’t picked out a wall color yet, but I’m leaning towards a peachy/taupe-y color or a yellow-y green that matches the print on the bedding. And some pink accents, of course! A little bit of pink goes a long way :)

YAY! Congrats on another beautiful princess!

Owen’s 1st room was yellow, and I thought it was adorable.
Unless, of course…you believe the whole color psychology thing, and that yellow is actually the most fatiguing to the eye; an “eye irritant,” if you will. It’s said that it tends to make a baby cry more. ;)
