the world around us

There are nearly ten thousand man-made objects larger than a softball in Earth orbit. Of these, only seven percent are operational satellites. The remaining ninety-three percent consists of dead satellites, rocket fragments and debris.

So there are 905 operational artificial satellites orbiting around the Earth …

and there are a couple thousand* non-operational artificial satellites floating around out there …

… and now they’re crashing into each other!

Oh yeah, and don’t forget about the TONS of space debris that’s just floating around, including an astronaut’s tool bag that is visible from Earth!

“Oh, great”

And there it goes!

I guess I might be the last person on Earth to know about all of this, but I find it extremely fascinating.

And if you’re like me and are just now learning about all of this, don’t worry — when they lose altitude, they end up burning up before they ever hit the Earth. So you won’t be hit by an old satellite while you’re walking your dog around the neighborhood.

Hopefully.

still alive

Still here … still alive … just very very busy. Will have Halloween pictures up soon!!

I voted today. Emma didn’t care AT ALL about the process, but she did great waiting with me for an hour and 26 minutes. All I know is that I totally deserve a free doughnut after that.

I will never complain about Emma’s waking once a night EVER again.

A 3-year-old Florida boy with a rare condition has not slept in three years.

Doctors said Rhett Lamb of St. Petersburg apparently has a condition called chiari malformation that puts pressure on his brain.

Rhett has never taken a nap or gone to sleep at night, forcing his parents to keep watch day and night.

“(My husband) has the day shift and I kind of have the afternoon shift,” mother Shannon Lamb said. “We share the night shift because no one can sleep in the house when he is up anyway.”

Lamb said she is working extra to pay for Rhett’s large medical bills. She also said her husband, David, has given up his job to care for their child.

“I would give anything for Rhett to be this normal little boy who plays and has a good time,” Lamb said. “If it takes going to every single solitary doctor, I will do it.”

According to the May Clinic, chiari malformation is a rare abnormality where brain tissue protrudes in the spinal canal.

Part of the skull is abnormally small and puts pressure on the brain.

Rhett checked into a hospital for an experimental surgery Thursday.

Kyle David Miller was an amazing, special little boy who filled the lives of those who knew him with overwhelming joy and love.

He was incredibly compassionate and gentle, with a deep love for all animals and a laugh that could make anyone smile. Kyle’s life was tragically cut short when his seatbelt failed after an incompetent driver ran a red light and hit our vehicle. The loss of our son Kyle was and still is more devastating than words can bear. But, through our love for him, we have created this Foundation to honor his memory and promote driver and car seat safety awareness. Kyle brought so much happiness and love into our lives and we want to share his love with the world with hope that we can prevent a tragedy such as this from happening to others. The goals of the Kyle David Miller Foundation are:

1. To educate the public about seatbelt failure and carseat safety.
2. To provide safe carseats to those who otherwise could not afford them.
3. To seek and promote legislation that will increase driver safety through more stringent testing standards.
4. To work with auto manufacturers toward the continued improvement of seatbelts and vehicle safety devices.

This lady took pictures of her outfit every day for a year.

I could do that.

But I don’t think you want to see me in boxers and a t-shirt (my pj’s) every day for a year. You think I’m kidding, but I’m not.
